Plaza Bar + Lounge
The aim for Plaza was to immerse patrons into the classic dive bar setting. The playful nature of the name influenced the creative direction and branding. Despite the word "plaza" often being associated with sophistication, it can also evoke more-low brow experiences, like a used car lot, a deserted strip mall, or a rent-by-the-hour motel.
The branding reflects the tension between high and low, and it doesn't take itself too seriously. Instead of a primary identifier, the brand is represented by a suite of graphics, including a burger mascot adorned with a crown and holding a pickle staff. Is he worthy? You bet.
“The identity, designed by Birmingham-based Matey, takes the dive bar aesthetic and builds on it with a humorous spin and a subtle high-brow design touch to yield some low-brow-looking applications that give off a great roadside-bar-where-a-Tarantino-movie-could-be-shot vibe.”
